WSSU Student to Intern with the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus (2673 hits)

Jayson Dawkins, a 2013 Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) graduate, was one of 17 students from around the world selected for an internship with the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus (CBC).

Dawkins, a political science major, from Charlotte, N.C., will intern in the office of Michigan U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow from August 25th through December 4th as part of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Emerging Leaders Internship Program.

The Emerging Leaders Internship Program, sponsored by Walmart, is a semester-long paid internship to work four days on Capitol Hill in federal agencies and at non-profit organizations. Past interns have served in various capacities at the Department of Justice, the Food and Drug Administration, the Transportation Security Administration, Department of Housing and Urban Development and on House and Senate committees. On Friday afternoons, interns attend educational seminars that focus on domestic and international issues, participate in leadership-training sessions and visit cultural and historical sites in the Washington, D.C. area. Interns must complete a team community service project in the surrounding area. CBCF provides housing and a stipend.

Interns were selected on based on solid scholastic achievement, strong writing skills, community service contributions, evidence of leadership skills, quality of application and, in some instances, interview performance. At WSSU, Dawkins was in the WSSU Honor’s program, National Collegiate Scholars Honors Society, and Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society. He also served as senior and junior class presidents, freshman and sophomore class senator, editor of the WSSU student government association website and he volunteered for a number of campus and community services including Habitat for Humanity and Relay for Life. He also was student worker in the offices of the Chancellor, University Advancement and Legal Affairs.

He is a member of Prince Hall Masons, Phi Mu Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
