Enroll at WSSU to gain first-hand experience at researching investments & how to buy & sell them! (1710 hits)

Student Success

Students at Winston-Salem State University established The WSSU Investment Fund in the fall of 2012, made possible through the generosity of BB&T Bank's $50,000 gift to the School of Business and Economics under the terms of the Ethical Values of Capitalism grant. The goal is to provide WSSU students first-hand experience at researching investments and grasping the concept of buying and selling a wide range of investments.

This fund offers practical investment experience to students by supplementing classroom material with decision-making responsibility using actual dollars. The fund's activities help develop the members' leadership and teamwork skills while simultaneously exposing students to investment practitioners from the local community.

For clarification, the WSSU student organization is an investment "fund" not a club. The difference between the two is that investments clubs place the resources of its members into a pool to obtain capital.

The fund plans to invest in strong domestic equities, bonds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and have a solid investment philosophy that believes in a long-term investment horizon and not day-to-day speculation. The organization is made up of a fund manager, assistant manager, three sector managers, and a dozen investment analysts. Duties of fund members include presenting stock recommendations in business meetings and assisting with monitoring investment performance. Every member has the amazing opportunity to contribute to building a diversified portfolio in accordance with the specified risk level and to generate the maximum return on investment.

"I have always believed that students learn best by doing," said Dr. Jessica Bailey, dean of the School of Business and Economics. "That is the underlying principle of the Student Investment Fund, a unique opportunity for students to learn the realities of managing investments, by investing real dollars and managing real investment portfolios."

She said students working in the new, state-of-the-art Finance Trading Room, are able to research investment opportunities, plan a portfolio consistent with the objectives of the Fund, and earn resources to support future scholars of the School of Business and Economics.

Dividends from the fund will be reinvested and will eventually be distributed in the form of scholarships to deserving WSSU students. In addition to the return on investments, the fund will focus on locating potential individual and business donors to make pledges or contribute to the fund’s mission.

The Fund Management team includes:

Fund Manager Theophilus Woodley
Assistant Fund Manager Antwon Freeman
Stock Manager Bryant Clinton
Bond Manager Dianna McCollum
Mutual Fund Manager Kevin Valdez
