Pogue Portrait Unveiled in Administration Building: Grambling State University (924 hits)

Grambling State University President Frank G. Pogue’s presidential photograph was unveiled during a brief, casual program in the foyer of Long-Jones Hall on the campus Tuesday morning. The photograph was taken by Glenn Lewis, the institution’s longtime campus photographer and yearbook editor.

“I’ve been blessed having the opportunity to serve this great, historical institution as president in a long line of leaders who worked with others to keep this university serving students and building strong careers,” said Pogue, with first lady Dorothy Pogue at his side. “If I’m remembered for anything after I’m gone, I want people to look at this Pogue fella and say I was known for being a student-centered leader, one who cared deeply about their welfare and someone who respected himself and respected others.”

Pogue has worked with his administration to bring fiscal control, accountability and integrity at Grambling State University. He empowered others to implement efforts that resulted in the university earning its first clean state legislative audit in recent memory. In addition, he and his team has grown and maintained undergraduate and graduate enrollment, even with continued state funding reductions. In addition, total grant expenditures, including faculty research, increased, believed to be the highest in university history.

After serving as interim president for seven months, Pogue was appointed the university’s eighth president in June 2010. In his nearly 50-year academic career, he has served either as interim president or president at four universities. He was the first African American to serve as president at the predominantly white Edinboro University of Pennsylvania when he was appointed in 1996. When he retired in 2007, the university named a student center in his honor and bestowed on him the title of president emeritus. Pogue intended to retire with his wife, Dorothy Pogue, when another opportunity arose. He served as interim president of Chicago State University from 2008-2009. Earlier in his career, he served as interim president at the State University of New York at Cobleskill from 1992-1993.
The other university presidents whose portraits hang in the first-floor lobby include: founding president Charles P. Adams, who served for 35 years; Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones, who became president in 1936 and five presidents who served between 1977 and 2009 when Pogue became interim president -- Joseph Benjamin Johnson; Harold W. Lundy; Raymond Hicks; Leonard Haynes III; Steve A. Favors; Neari Francois Warner, the university’s first female president, who served a three-year interim term, and Horace Judson.
