Alcorn President, M. Christopher Brown II, Ph.D., delivered the 41st Annual Charles H. Thompson Lecture-Colloquium, “The Declining Significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Relevance, Reputation, and Respect in Obamamerica” November 9, 2011.
The Journal of Negro Education coinciding with the launch of President Obama’s second term slates the presentation for publication this month.
President Brown is a nationally recognized expert on HBCUs and land-grant institutions. His research examines the history and honors the role of HBCUs in America higher education.
He is the author, contributing author or editor of the following books: “Educating African American Males: Contexts for Consideration, Possibilities for Practice”; “African American Males and Education: Researching the Convergence of Race and Identity”; “The Broken Cisterns of African American Education: Academic Performance and Achievement in the Post-Brown Era”; “Black Colleges: New Perspectives on Policy and Practice”; and “The Children Hurricane Katrina Left Behind: Schooling Context, Professional Preparation and Community Politics”.
President Brown attained his B.S. in elementary education from South Carolina State University and his M.S.Ed. in educational policy and evaluation from the University of Kentucky. He earned a Ph.D. in higher education from The Pennsylvania State University with a cognate in public administration and political science.
