VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Preseason Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball favorite South Carolina State will appear twice on national television this season.
The two special Friday night games will take place at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center and are a part of the MEAC’s basketball television schedule for the 2005-06 season announced on Thursday. As part of the league’s agreement with ESPNU, the network will combine with ESPN2 to air eight regular-season men’s games, two regular-season women’s games, and both conference championship finals.
The men’s final will air on ESPN Classic (Channel 28 on Time Warner Cable).
SCSU’s first appearance will take place Feb. 3 against defending conference champion Delaware State at 9 p.m. Three weeks later, the Bulldogs will play host to Hampton at 9 p.m. on Feb. 24. Both games are scheduled to air on ESPNU (Channel 609 on DirecTV and Channel 148 on The Dish Network).
The 2005-06 schedule features a full-day of action on ESPNU and ESPN2 on Monday, Jan. 16 as part of the Martin Luther King Holiday. Four MEAC games are schedule to air beginning with Bethune-Cookman and North Carolina A&T on ESPN2 (Channel 27 on Time Warner Cable) live at noon from the Corbett Sports Center in Greensboro, N.C.
The B-CC-North Carolina A&T game will be followed by Delaware State, who will take on the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on ESPNU at 2 p.m., and then Norfolk State vs. Morgan State at 6 p.m.The final game of the King Holiday is the first of two televised women’s games as Delaware State takes on UMES in a taped-delayed broadcast on ESPNU at 10 p.m.
Hampton University and Howard University will open the MEAC television slate on Jan. 9, as the two “HUs” battle for bragging rights at the Hampton Convocation Center. The women’s schedule is highlighted by a meeting between the last two MEAC Champions — Hampton and Coppin State — who will meet in a Monday night double-header with the men on Feb. 13.
Bethune-Cookman and Norfolk State wrap up the regular-season schedule on Wed., March 1 at 10 p.m.
“Being televised nationally by ESPNU, ESPN2 and ESPN Classic continues to give our institutions the national exposure they deserve,” MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas said in a press release. “It also keeps us moving toward our long-range goals of providing national television for our coaches, student-athletes, alumni and fans.”
