GET On The BUS: Students Unify, Mobilize
and Tackle Tough Issues in Nation's Capitol
The Atlanta University Center Council of Students is mobilizing AUC students for the "Millions More Movement" on Oct. 15 in Washington, D.C. The event marks the 10th anniversary of the historic "Million Man March."
The Movement is designed to bring together people who are committed to improving the quality of life for communities who have suffered from oppression, injustice and inequality, and provides an opportunity to network diverse individuals, organizations and communities into a unified movement for positive change.
In a passionate plea, student Jennifer Reid, AUC Chief-of-Staff, writes:
LONG LIVE THE SPIRIT OF THE MILLION MAN MARCH…LONG LIVE THE SPIRIT OF THE MILLION MAN MARCH…LONG LIVE THE SPIRIT OF THE MILLION MAN MARCH! These were the words that rung through the air and the kissed the ears of a Million Black men on that chilly October morning in 1995. We all remember it. We all heard it on the radio, saw it on the news, and read it in the papers….We said, "Look at those Black men, our grandfathers, fathers, uncles and brothers, getting on those buses and promising to return with a new plan of freedom and restoration for the Black family."
Although many extraordinary events and movements resulted from that march, ten years later our Black Village is still an endangered sector of civilization. Yes, we have more entrepreneurs, more doctors, more lawyers, more government officials, and more corporate executives than our race has ever seen before. But please do not think that for one moment “We have arrived” because we still have a long way to go. Our people are still hungry, homeless, and hopeless in every rural, urban, and yes, even suburban neighborhood in the country.
So now the question is: What are we going to do about it? No, even better, the question should be: “What are you going to do about it?” I invite you…no, I challenge you to join the Millions More Movement and stand in unity as a member of the AUC on October 15 at the Mall in Washington DC.
The days are gone when Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College are seen as separate institutions that are “coincidentally” five yards away from each other. Take charge of our massive power. Take advantage of our large numbers…. politicians do it all the time so why can’t you? The addressed issues at the March will be unity, spiritual values, education, economic development, political power, reparations, the prison industrial complex, health, artistic/cultural development, and peace. Please do not confuse this MOVEMENT with just another run-of-the mill march. There is no better time, there is no more historic moment that the 10th Anniversary of the Million Man March to mobilize and organize our people and implement the Agenda of Freedom, Equality, and Unity.
Never in our lifetimes has such a historic opportunity for the civil rights of our people been offered to us as a grand invitation to let the world know that the educated and empowered Black youth of the nation are armed and dangerous and we will no longer stand for injustice and disparity. So if you believe in our people and you believe that the time has arrived for change, take it upon yourself to confirm your attendance in Washington. Long Live The Spirit of the Million Man March…Long Live The Spirit Of The Millions More Movement…Long Live The Spirit Of The Black People! See you in Washington on October 15, 2005.
