The Atlanta Business League hosted its 21st Super Tuesday Anniversary last week, during which Atlanta Daily World publisher and CEO M. Alexis Scott was recognized as a "Millennium Pacesetter" honoree along with Valencia Adams, vice president and chief diversity officer of BellSouth.
Super Tuesday is a signature event giving ABL members a chance to recognize extraordinary women who have learned to balance the needs of their communities, families, faith and businesses.
"It was a great honor to receive the award from the group of women who made the selection," Scott said. "It always has great meaning to be recognized by your peers."
ABL also recognized several other women for outstanding achievements.
The winner in the "Home-Based Business Achievement" category was Veronica Wright, the owner of Nu Concept Courier Inc. The "Creative Style" category winner was Sonja Strayhand, the owner of Sonja Strayhand Interiors. The "Success Against the Odds" award went to Sanquinetta Dover, president of DoverStaffing, Inc. The "Non-Traditional Business" award winner was Barbara Billingsley, president and CEO of B&B Movers, Inc. The "Outstanding Achievement - Woman of the Year" award winner was Ernestine Bennett, president and CEO of EB Enterprise Unlimited, Inc.
During the annual Super Tuesday Conference, the Atlanta Business League provides comprehensive seminars, displays exhibits, and celebrates members who succeed against the odds.
Scott said her main goal is "to continue to make the newspaper better and to make sure that it remains a part of the community for a long time." Adams, who has spent her entire career with BellSouth, said she was committed to making BellSouth a good corporate citizen.
The Atlanta Daily World was founded by Scott's grandfather, W.A. Scott II, in 1928. She was elected as chairman of the board, president and publisher of the newspaper in 1997, after a successful 22-year career with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Cox Enterprises, Inc. Atlanta Journal-Constitution Publisher John Mellot presented the awards to Scott and Adams.
Scott serves on the boards of numerous organizations and has served as chair of the Succession Planning Committee for the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). She is past co-chair of the NNPA Editorial Committee, a past president of the Atlanta Press Club and the Atlanta Chapter of the National Association of Media Women, a past vice-chair of the board of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, and past treasurer of the Atlanta Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Scott is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, and attended Barnard College in New York City and Spelman College in Atlanta. She also attended the Columbia University School of Journalism as a summer participant in the 1974 Michelle Clark Fellowship Program.
Adams, also recognized as a "Millennium Pacesetter," has had a career with BellSouth Corp. that spans 35 years. She oversees the development and implementation of diversity and inclusion strategies, including collaboration with the Chairman's Diversity Council. Prior to her current position, she was chief operating officer for BellSouth's Consumer Services division and was an advisory council member to the president of BellSouth Telecommunications Inc. Adams also has a long history of community involvement and fundraising success. She is a graduate of Georgia State University and has taken management courses at Columbia University and Emory University.
The Atlanta Business League was established in 1933 as an affiliate of the National Business League, founded by Dr. Booker T. Washington. The mission of the National Business League is to enhance and expand the business community at large, to encourage civic pride, and to reinvest community money within the community. The Atlanta Business League has implemented programs and initiatives that led to the development of relationships that have translated into millions of collars in revenue and hundreds of new business start-ups.
