RICHMOND, Va. – Hank Aaron, Major League Baseball’s homerun king, heads up a panel to discuss how Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) can stem the decline of African-American participation in our national pastime.
The Second Annual Bobby Bonds Memorial Symposium on the Survival of Historically Black Colleges and Universities Baseball Programs will outline how HBCUs should be the focal point to rekindle African-American interest in the sport and address the educational and social ills that plague our at-risk youth.
Along with Hank Aaron, Roger Cador, head baseball coach at Southern University, will appear on the panel again this year. Cador’s Southern Jaguars traditionally fields one of the best teams in all of black college baseball.
The symposium is named in honor of the late baseball star Bobby Bonds, who was instrumental in its development. It will be held July 30th at 7:00 p.m. at Sale Hall Auditorium on the campus of Morehouse College in Atlanta.
Joining Aaron and Cador on the panel will be former National League Batting Champion Ralph Garr of the Atlanta Braves, Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Commissioner Ken Free, Atlanta Braves Scout Robert Lucas, Major League Baseball’s RBI Program Founder John Young, Morehouse College Athletic Director Andre Pattillo, and Prairie View A&M University Head Baseball Coach Michael Robertson among others to be named later.
The symposium is open to the public and there is no fee to attend.
