Reaching for Solutions Posted on 10-07-2014

In my teaching and administrative role at my institution, I am starting to encounter students seeking internships or conducting job searches who have problems with background checks (driving records, credit, minor legal issues, information on social media sites, etc.)

Because these matters can be used as a tool to disqualify applicants, I am seeking to develop a more systematic way of raising student awareness of how extensive pre-employment background checks have become in today's environment, and how they can be used against African Americans and other minorities.  Does/did your HBCU have any sort of program or special activities in this area? I'd be interested to know what strategies have shown promise, or any suggestions you have on what you think might be effective in reaching today's HBCU student.
