Born in rural Southeastern Louisiana, and growing up in Oakland California, Opal Mabry started her life as a diverse individual. Now 24 years old, she is blazing a path all her own. With a vast background in travel, academic achievement, and invaluable career experience, she has much more that she would love to accomplish.
While she is definitely no stranger to hard work, Opal began working at the age of 16 as a Web Designer at a small software company in Berkeley, California. Always keeping academics first, she was enrolled in many advanced courses in school including English and History and even found time for extra-curricular activities. She was given the title of Events Coordinator within the school Student Government Leadership Department.
Her mother, a school teacher, took advantage of every opportunity to expose her to other cultures and ways of life. Before reaching the 9th grade, she had already visited countries such as France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. As a senior in high school, she was a debutante with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated which required an extensive background in community service and academic success.
As a student at Southern University, she adapted well to her new environment. In 2002, she served as a News Writer with the Southern University DIGEST. She began her Communications career as an intern in 2004 at Max 94.1 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As a senior, she worked as a Tape Operator and Intern at WAFB Channel 9 in Baton Rouge. Enjoying the HBCU life, she still focused on academics, making the Dean’s List. She also was President of a newly formed organization within the Mass Communications Department named the Southern Broadcast Association.
Work aside; she completed a three week program with the SU foreign language department to attend the University of Orizaba, Vera Cruz, Mexico taking a Spanish course while volunteering as a teacher for Spanish speaking 5th and 6th graders.
Now a Mass Communications graduate, she resides in the San Francisco Bay Area and is continuing her career in journalism. She is working hard to establish herself, working as a Board Operator and Events Specialist at KBLX 102.9 FM and a Traffic Producer at Clear Channel, both in San Francisco. To add a little variety to her job experience, she is an intern for her Aunt’s manager, New York Times best selling author, Mary B. Morrison.
Opal is still pursuing new venues and opportunities to enhance her life experiences. She aspires to eventually be a television Entertainment Reporter and own a cosmetic and beauty company. While her goals are endless, she will strive to accomplish every one of them.
