Making History: Youngest African American Female Pilot Pursues Education at HBCU Spelman College! (1994 hits)

Breaking Barriers: Kamora Freeland’s Historic Journey from Pilot to Spelman Scholar

At just 17 years old, Kamora Freeland has already made history—first as the youngest African American female to earn a private pilot’s license, and now as a standout student at Spelman College, one of the nation’s most prestigious Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Skipping her freshman year after earning college credits in high school, Kamora is embracing the full HBCU experience as she begins her sophomore year, redefining what it means to break barriers.

The Power of an HBCU Education: Spelman College & Black Excellence

Spelman College, a beacon of Black womanhood, leadership, and academic excellence, is the perfect environment for a trailblazer like Kamora. Founded in 1881, Spelman has produced influential leaders across industries, and Kamora’s journey adds to its long legacy of excellence.

Her story is one of ambition and determination. After making national headlines for earning her private pilot’s license at Republic Airport in Long Island, Kamora set her sights even higher. While aviation initially drew her in—with aspirations of becoming a commercial airline pilot—her passion for business and leadership led her to major in finance with a minor in entrepreneurship at Spelman.

A Legacy of Excellence: Kamora’s HBCU Journey

Kamora’s path to Spelman was paved with academic rigor and perseverance. She accelerated her studies by skipping a year of high school while attending Kingsborough Early College Secondary School and Kingsborough Community College. Her commitment to education and service didn’t stop there—she also became a certified birthing doula and lifeguard, demonstrating her passion for helping others.

Now, as a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship and a member of the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program, Kamora is fully immersing herself in the rich culture, sisterhood, and academic challenges that define the Spelman experience.

“Starting college as a sophomore has been a whirlwind of emotions—exciting, overwhelming, and liberating all at once,” Kamora shared with SI Live. “It’s like stepping into a whole new world where you’re figuring out who you are, balancing independence, and navigating friendships, academics, and late-night study sessions.”

A Mother’s Pride, A Daughter’s Future

For Kamora’s mother, Lakema Freeland, watching her daughter flourish at Spelman is a bittersweet moment. “I’m so proud of her for taking that big step, but my heart aches knowing the house is a little quieter without her laughter. It’s a mix of excitement for her future and the longing to hold on to the moments we’ve shared.”

The Next Chapter: Building a Legacy at Spelman

With her eyes set on success, Kamora is embracing the supportive community, cultural pride, and academic rigor that HBCUs provide. Whether in the air as a pilot or in the boardroom as a future business leader, she continues to inspire young Black women to dream big and break barriers.
