Yudika Rodriguez wins individual medalist award

For the fifth consecutive year, Bethune-Cookman Women's Golf captured the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Golf Showcase title on Tuesday afternoon at Crosswinds Golf Club. The two-round, two-day event was hosted by Savannah State University for the third year in a row.

Bethune-Cookman led by more than 40 strokes after Monday's opening round. However, it did not end there, as the Wildcats finished the event leading the field by 66 strokes. As a team, the Wildcats fired rounds of 286 and 291, finishing with a 577 (+1) for the tournament, respectively.

In fact, the Wildcats represented the top four scorers on the final leaderboard.

"This title shows just how hard these young ladies have practiced since their last event," said Tony O'Neal, Interim Director of Golf for the Wildcats. "They work hard every round of every day. They want to get better each time out. And this title gives them proof that hard work certainly does pay off."

Yudika Rodriguez (68-70=138, -6), a sophomore from Salinas, Puerto Rico, claimed individual medalist honors for the second consecutive year at the MEAC Showcase. She shot an opening round 4-under-par 68, only to turn around with a 2-under 70 final scorecard in Tuesday's 18 holes of play.

Saraid Ruiz (72-73=145, +1) finished second on the final leaderboard, turning in a final round 1-over 73.

Shamiso Hatchard (72-74=146, +2), a sophomore from Milton Keynes, England, fired a second round 2-over 74, allowing her to claim third place for the tournament.

Meanwhile, junior Mackenzie Butzer (74-74=148, +4) of Chatham, Ontario fired consecutive rounds of 2-over 74 in order to finish fourth place on the final leaderboard.

The final scorer for the Wildcats was sophomore Alejandra Sanchez (79-82=161, +17), finishing ninth in the field overall.

In its first year having a women's golf program, North Carolina A&T (328-315=643, +67) finished second behind Bethune-Cookman. Hampton was third, followed in order by Savannah State and Delaware State, respectfully.

"I am just so proud of these young ladies," continued O'Neal. "From Yudika; to Sara; to Shamiso; to Mackenzie; and to Alejandra…they all worked extremely hard this. I am glad they are able to see the product of their hard work, individually and collectively."

Women's Golf is back in action May 11-14, when the Wildcats try and defend their PGA National Minority Women's Golf Championship for a sixth consecutive year. The event takes place in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and is hosted by the PGA.
