Yathish Ramena, a doctoral candidate of aquaculture/fisheries at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences, was recently selected to receive the Striped Bass Growers Association (SBGA) 2016 Walter Landry Memorial Travel Award. The $250 award will defray his travel expenses to the SBGA Industry Forum at the Aquaculture America 2017 Conference in San Antonio, Texas in late February.
The travel award is presented annually to college students who demonstrate an interest in the culture of striped bass or hybrid striped bass, as well as students pursuing aquaculture as a career. Ramena was chosen as a recipient based on his research in minimizing the use of fishmeal in the diets of sunshine bass through feeds made from plant-based, non-genetically modified ingredients.
“This award provides confirmation of the importance of Yathish’s research as he nears the end of his Ph.D. program,” Dr. Rebecca Lochmann, interim chair of the UAPB Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries and Ramena’s advisor, said. “The project is a multi-institutional collaboration between UAPB, the Harry K. Dupree Stuttgart National Aquaculture Research Center and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.”
The SBGA is a non-profit organization formed to promote the development of the commercial cultivation of striped bass and its hybrids. According to the organization, its members include individuals, organizations and corporations directly involved in the production and marketing of striped bass, as well as suppliers of feed, aquaculture equipment and support services. Associate members include federal, state, university and private entities that conduct research to enhance all phases of striped bass culture.
