For the public's convenience, we have one being held THIS evening (after work-hours) TODAY (Wed. Jan. 18), and the other being held tomorrow on Thurs. (Jan. 19), near the lunch-hour.

FIRST KING CELEBRATION EVENT
TODAY (Wed., Jan 18), at 6 p.m. at the Historic Davis Theatre, downtown.
Sponsored by: Troy University, Alabama State University & The Friends of the ASU Theatre.

The first event that celebrates the life of Dr. King is being held TODAY at 6 p.m. (Wednesday, Jan. 18) at the Historic Davis Theatre in downtown Montgomery, which highlights Dr. King’s "Beloved Community" and those local individuals who are working to keep his dream alive. It is the third annual celebration sponsored by Alabama State University, Troy University-Montgomery and The Friends of the ASU Theatre.

The event will be full of song, pageantry and pomp due to the fact that it is being produced and directed by a talented star of Hollywood, stage & television, ASU's dean of its College of Visual and Performing Arts, the award-winning actor and educator, Dr. Tommie 'Tonea' Stewart. The event's 'masters of ceremony' are both Tonya Terry of WSFA TV 12 and Kenneth Mullinax, director of Media Relations for ASU - it is the third consecutive year both have performed this duty.

The theme of the event is “A Message to the Future from the Keepers of the Dream,” which reflects the programs' desire for America to move forward as we continue to bond as a community.

This MLK Celebration event contact is Lois Jackson (executive assistant to Dean Stewart), who may be reached at ldjackson@alasu.edu or 334-229-6755.

The news media contact is Kenneth Mullinax, who may be reached at 334-229-4104.

Thursday (Jan. 19), at 11 a.m. at ASU's Abernathy College of Education Auditorium, on Harris Way.
Sponsored by: Alabama State University

The second citywide event to honor Dr. King and those he inspired to work for freedom and equality is being held on Thursday (Jan. 19) at 11 a.m. at Alabama State University's Ralph Abernathy College of Education Auditorium, which is near the Carter Hill Avenue entrance to the campus on Harris Way - the old Hall Street.

This annual event is open to all members of the public and the ASU family - free of charge - and has been an annual event at ASU for many decades.

The event will include music by the ASU Choir and the Mighty Marching Hornets Band, pageantry by students from the ASU Theatre Dept. and a speech by an acclaimed and rising member of the leadership of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, the Honorable Brandon McGee, who is also an important ASU alumnus.
