Mayor Jennifer Roberts to give opening remarks
Johnson C. Smith University invites Charlotte’s entrepreneurial community to engage with JCSU student entrepreneurs Thursday, March 10 as they compete for $2500 to develop their business idea. Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts will help kick off the event taking place from 2-5pm in the New Science Center Auditorium.
Much concern has been raised in recent years about economic development in minority communities, and this pitch event helps college-age students grow their business plans and networks. JCSU’s Innovo Scholar Society and Smith Institute for Applied Research’s Innovo Laboratory partnered with Queen City Forward to develop the pitch competition. Wells Fargo’s Supplier Diversity sponsorship supplied the $2500 grand prize.
Students undertook a rigorous series of steps to prepare for the competition. They had to identify a problem, solution and target market as well as provide a 30-second video describing their idea; pitch at a semi-final round before a panel of judges; refine their idea with business mentors and prepare to pitch again at the main competition. The entries represent a range of disciplines, from robotics in social enterprise, to mentorship for youth, to a computer app, to campus-based services. The grand prize winner and the runner-up will win membership to JCSU’s Innovo Scholar Society, which endeavors to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit in students. To register, go to
