Allen University is pleased to announce an Open House Event for the Mother Mary Norris Honors Center (HC). This event is open to Allen University faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, community members, and corporate sponsors. The Open House will take place on the campus of Allen University on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. at the Mother Mary Norris Honors Center at 1416 Pine Street Columbia, SC 29204. The special meet and greet introduces Allen University Honors Scholars and the Honors Program Director, Dr. Rachelle Washington, to the Allen University and Columbia community. The 2015-16 academic year highlights Allen University’s first graduating cohort and the highest GPAs for its freshman cohort. Currently, there are 28 Honors Scholars.
The Honors Center, dedicated in December 2014, recognizes Dr. Mary Ann Norris, Episcopal Supervisor for the Seventh District African Methodist Episcopal Church, for her distinguished service in academic leadership and excellence. "Allen University is indeed forging the pathway to growth and greatness by strategically planning enriching experiential opportunities for the students in the honors program," says Dr. Rachelle Washington, the director of the Honors Programs and First Year Experience.
Dr. Mary Ann Norris, most recently was the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from Allen University. The Honors Center will model her legacy of academic excellence by nurturing academic exploration, honing leadership skills through experiential learning initiatives, and expanding creative inquiry via research endeavors for the students in the program. The Honors Center evokes the spirit of Sankofa—a Ghanaian concept of reaching back to look forward. The Honors Center will be touched by the influences of a wider Allen University community—past and present.
