After nine years, multiple moves, a building demolition, 45 FEMA trailers, three new buildings and three building renovations, Southern University at New Orleans is restored to full capacity for the first time since Hurricane Katrina inundated the campus with water.
The University will commemorate this milestone at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014 on the front lawn of the Emmett. W. Bashful Administration Building.
State and local officials, including New Orleans Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu, are scheduled to attend the event, which marks the completion of renovations in the Bashful Building, the Leonard S. Washington Memorial Library and the University Center. Attendees will have an opportunity to tour each building and witness SUNO Chancellor Victor Ukpolo roll the first ball in the University Bowling Alley since Hurricane Katrina.
“I am happy to report that SUNO is back and is bigger and stronger than ever,” Chancellor Ukpolo said. “Now that the University is whole again, we are focused on moving forward by introducing new degree programs in coming months and starting new construction projects. We hope everyone will help us celebrate this significant moment in our history.”
