Alcorn President recognized by Phi Beta Sigma for community service (861 hits)

National President Jimmy Hammock and the General Board of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. announced that Alcorn President M. Christopher Brown II is the coveted recipient of the 2013 Image Award for Education.

President Brown will receive the award on Friday, July 12 at 6:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Phi Beta Sigma’s 99th Anniversary Conclave.

“His {President Brown} constitution is fully dedicated to excellence in education and service to others,” said President Hammock in the selection of Brown for the annual prestigious award that recognizes excellence in scholarship and exemplifies the ideals of national service to ones community.

One important pillar of Alcorn excellence focuses on community access and Brown believes in offering programs that will enrich and empower our communities.

In 2012, Brown was instrumental in welcoming nearly 60 children from surrounding communities to Alcorn’s inaugural Children Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School, a summer enrichment program designed to enhance the literacy skills of scholars between kindergarten and 12thgrade. Now in its second year, the program continues to benefit kids from nearby communities.

“President Brown makes us all proud,” said Justin Mathis, a brother of Phi Beta Sigma and a delegate at the Conclave for the Alpha Iota Sigma Chapter, as he congratulates President Brown who is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

“The award is given to those who best represent our motto – Culture for Service, Service for Humanity. And nothing says we are here to support you like a president opening the doors of the university to benefit the community. From library and facility use to hosting area proms and numerous educational camps and programs, our president believes in serving others and is a great example for us all.”

President Brown has received numerous awards and recognitions for his scholarly works, leadership and service. Recently, he was named HBCU Male President of the Year by the Center for HBCU Advocacy.

“A special thank you to President Hammock and the General Board of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. for this honor,” said President Brown.

President Brown attained his B.S. in elementary education from South Carolina State University and his M.S.Ed. in educational policy and evaluation from the University of Kentucky. He earned a Ph.D. in higher education from The Pennsylvania State University with a cognate in public administration and political science. Dr. Brown has also presented research on six continents and is the author/editor of 19 books and monographs.
