On March 8, 2013, Columbia University’s Teachers College Record, a journal of research, analysis, and commentary in the field of education, published a review of “African American Males and Education: Researching the Convergence of Race and Identity”, a book written by Alcorn President M. Christopher Brown II.
The book was co-authored by Dr. Brown’s colleague T. Elon Dancy III, professor of higher education at the University of Oklahoma, and published in 2012. Brown’s work explores with extraordinary candor and clarity, the relationship between educational experiences and academic outcomes of African American males.
In their review, Robert T. Palmer, Ph.D., assistant professor of Student Affairs Administration at the State University of New York at Binghamton, and J. Luke Wood, Ph.D., assistant professor of Administration, Rehabilitation, and Postsecondary Education at San Diego State University, said, “Given the stagnation of black male enrollment in higher education, scholars have worked tirelessly to produce critical information to help educators, policymakers, and stakeholders increase the success of black males in K-12 and higher education. Such is the aim of M. Christopher Brown II and T. Elon Dancy’s edited volume.”
Palmer and Wood continue, “The first {chapter} focuses on black male identity and issues in society that impact their experiences through a historical, cultural, and context vantage point. The second discusses the educational experiences of black males and ways teachers and mentors can facilitate their success. The third section examines the intersection of culture and identity for a select group of black males in higher education.”
