I-Team 10 investigation: Chase accounts stolen
Chase Bank customers in the Rochester area are being warned to check their accounts for suspicious activity. It comes after some customers found their debit cards had been compromised. I-team 10 Investigator Brett Davidsen just spoke with bank officials.

This is not the first time this year that Chase has sent out an alert warning their customers that their debit card numbers might have been stolen. This latest incident is still unfolding. Gates Police at the Chili Avenue branch are trying to get more information.

A customer of the Gates branch said she had four ATM withdrawals from her account totaling $2,000. The illegal withdrawals occurred in Florida.

According to a Chase spokesperson the bank said it noticed some suspicious activity in the last couple of weeks and as a result cancelled the debit cards of 500 of its Rochester area customers. Those customers are being notified by phone and by letter.

The bank is not sure, at this point, how the thieves got the account information. Last March, the same thing happened at a branch in Greece. Investigators suspected the thieves placed a skimming device onto the ATM to illegally read and store account information from the cards.

The bank will not say if it believes a skimming device was used in these recent thefts, but the spokesperson said they will be checking surveillance video. In the meantime, the bank said affected customers have zero liability and the money is being returned to their accounts.

Chase is advising customers to check their accounts and contact the bank if they find any unauthorized transactions.
