BEIJING - Jamaicans Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell advanced to the final of the 100m Saturday night, but American Tyson Gay finished fifth in his semifinal and did not qualify.

Darvis Patton and Walter Dix will represent the U.S.

In the first semifinal, Dix finished second behind a coasting Bolt. Patton finished in the fourth and final qualifying spot in the same semifinal in which Gay finished fifth.

"Toward the finish line, I couldn't tell if I made it to the finals or not," Gay said. "I looked up there and realized I didn't. It was kind of devastating.

"I thought I had a better start than I had the first two rounds. I pretty much ran hard through the finish line. I'm pretty upset."

At the U.S. Trials, Gay won the 100m in a wind-aided 9.68. He then fell injured in the 200m and did not qualify in that event. The Olympics were his first competition since that injury.

"I may have needed more races, but I don't really have any excuses," he said. "I just didn't make it. My hamstring feels good; it's not bothering me.

"When you race in the Olympics and the Trials, you peak your body two times. I was prepared to peak my body twice, but the injury set me back three or four weeks. It's (the hamstring) healthy, 100 percent. It's obvious that my fitness is not there."

The 100m was his only chance at an individual medal at these Olympics. He likely will be chosen for the U.S. men's 4x100m team, if he is deemed healthy.

"Definitely, I'm interested in running the relay," Gay said.
