Founder/CEO of HBCUCONNECT.com goes back to HU

Columbus, OH- William R. Moss III, Founder and CEO of HBCUConnect.com recently sat down with his alma mater, Hampton University, and discussed his company, competition, and his days at HU. Moss was featured in Hampton’s alumni magazine and was very open and humble as he talked about his growing business and how he got connected.

“I wanted to do something along the lines of classmates.com, but for us.” This is what Moss had to say about the creation of HBCUConnect.com, which is now the # 1 destination on the Internet for information about and services for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Moss, himself, got connected as a student at Hampton. He was a drummer in the Marching Force band and served as Mr. Computer Science during his senior year. After graduation in 1995 he landed a position with Lucent Technologies in Columbus, Ohio as a software programmer, but continued to connect and network with his fellow HU alum. It was through this network that Moss started HBCUConnect.com in 1999, eventually leaving Lucent in 2004 and focusing full- time on HBCUConnect.

With so many other community websites out there Moss expressed no concern over what some would deem as competitors. “I don’t see them as a threat at all. We have everything Face book has and more.” Moss went on to add that his company has expanded into print media and now publishes a college and alumni magazine, which will continue to fulfill his mission of providing information and services for the HBCU Community.

With his business growing steadily Moss credited his education at Hampton as key for his success. “I wouldn’t be doing what I do today if it weren’t for Hampton.”
