FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- North Carolina Central University senior Cassie King became only the second Lady Eagle in school history to record a triple-double during Saturday's 98-78 victory over Fayetteville State University inside Capel Arena in Fayetteville, N.C.
King, a native of Wendell, N.C., amassed 26 points, 14 rebounds and a career-high 10 blocked shots during NCCU's most convincing win in Fayetteville since beating the Lady Broncos 67-44 on Jan. 13, 1990. Ironically, that was the same year that the only other player in NCCU women's basketball history notched a triple-double, when Pame Sawyer tallied 20 points, 11 rebounds and a school record 11 blocked shots versus Fayetteville State on Feb. 3, 1990.
King's feat overshadowed the contributions of rookie guard Jasmine Newkirk, sophomore transfer LaVonna Hailey and junior guard Casey Daniel. Newkirk came off the Lady Eagle bench to score a season-best 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Hailey netted a season-high 14 points, while Daniel hit four triples to finish with 15 points for NCCU (7-4, 2-2 CIAA).
FSU (7-4, 3-1 CIAA) was topped by Chelsea Jeter with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Three other Lady Broncos scored double-figures as Jamara McMillan collected 15 points, Tenisha McArthur contributed 13 points and Shayla Roberts added 12 points.
