FIRST ANNUAL FAMILY EMPOWERMENT CONFERENCE SET TO TACKLE ISSUES PLAGUING COMMUNITIES FROM ACADEMIC STANDPOINT

Miami Gardens, FL – In an effort to empower families, Florida Memorial University, with sponsorship from The Children’s Trust, is hosting the first annual Family Empowerment Conference from November 9th through November 11th on the campus of Florida Memorial University located at 15800 NW 42nd Avenue in Miami Gardens. During the conference, selected scholars and presenters will address issues incorporating research, practice, community action, parental involvement, and other issues identified in local studies on families in Miami-Dade County.

By using a culturally relevant approach, this conference will provide practical information that will strengthen families and enable individual family members to access resources within their communities. “The goals of the Family Empowerment Conference are to increase community awareness in the areas of health, safety, crime prevention, and parental and community responsibility, and provide training and technical assistance to service providers to better enable them to deliver services to families and children,” explained Dr. Mary M. Williams, FEC Coordinator and Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. “This is a rare opportunity for academicians, policy makers, service providers, parents and children to convene for the common purpose of sharing research findings and practical information that will assist families in achieving autonomy,” she said.

Florida Memorial University will conclude its Family Empowerment Conference with an Empowerment Fair on Saturday, November 11, 2006 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The fair will emphasize health, economic, civic, personal, and spiritual empowerment. Health care practitioners will provide information on child, adolescent, and adult health, screening for cholesterol, hypertension, and cancer, and tips on injury prevention, immunizations and healthy eating. Financial planners and realtors will be on hand to provide information on buying a home, managing debt, investing, and real estate planning. Local businessmen and businesswomen will provide guidance on becoming an entrepreneur.
