Being the first!

Jehan Bunch · Monday, June 19th 2006 at 6:20PM · 179 views
I had a conversation with an associate the other day. She is the first in her family to graduate from high school and college. She is a highly driven person. She has a great job and beautiful home. She feels that she is " made" and she feels she is to good for her "low income family" and " average friends" . I dont think she realizes that being the first comes with a lot of responsibility!

"Being the first to do this or that means you have the responsibility to work in the interest of a second, a seventh, a nine hundredth to follow where you pioneered." - Dr. Johnetta Cole
My associate has a plethora of nieces, nephews and cousins who could be that second, seventh and nine hundredth!
When looking forward, one should never forget to look back!

What do you think?

Sounds like she needs to read the book of Ecclesiastes Sis... I do not know here or her mindset or her story or what point she is coming from that may have its valid points.
Just my 2cents worth, good blog and hope to see more.

I really do agree with u because the same people u see going up u will see going down! She should stop and realize what she is doing because she can't make it without her family and friends. For example, I am the first person to go to college in my family and it is a lot of pressure because all eyez is on me. I also have to set a good example for my sister's and my cousin. So u are right because it is a lot of responsiblity!!!!!

My lifestyle isn't lucrative but I am doing better off than a lot of my cousins and friends back home. I was "the first" in my entire family (immediate and extended) to join the military. Talk about culture shock!!

I just hope me being the first does not inspire my daughters to do what I do. The military life is not easy nowadays. Not easy for school, relationships, or stability. Not to mention, we are being downsized, yet fighting more wars.

Now, I will support them and be proud if they join. But I will not like it.
