The heat was certainly prevalent on Tuesday for the second day of fall practice for the Tennessee State football team.

“I thought that our guys came out excited,” Head Coach Rod Reed said. “We did some great things as a team, we got after it and a couple of players made some big plays.”

Among those to find the end zone for the offense were receivers Quindell Cousins and Dantwaun O’Neal, while fellow wide out sophomore Chris Sanders-McCollum made several receptions over the middle and in traffic.

“I hope what Sanders McCollum did today carries over to this upcoming season because he really looked good out there today. He played like a freshman last year, but it looks like he figured it out,” Reed said.

The offense narrowly missed on more big plays, but perhaps the biggest of the day was made on defense. The front four rushed the offensive line on an attempted draw play, causing a bad quarterback-running back exchange. Samquan Evans picked up the fumble and ran it all the way back for a touchdown.

“The defense ranked pretty high in turnover margin last year and we start practice every day with a drill focused on takeaways. In order to be a great defense, you have to be able to force turnovers,” Reed said.

Another standout on defense was JUCO transfer Vantavious Williams who flew around at outside linebacker in both run pursuit and pass coverage.
