TUSVM Alumni Provides Veterinary Support
Tuskegee Vets Help Hurricane-Affected Pets
The Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine (TUSVM) is assisting displaced and traumatized animals from New Orleans. Alumni traveled to hurricane-affected Gulf States to provide veterinary support with a small animal ambulatory unit.
Doctor Kelly Crowdis, TUSVM alumnus and lecturer, and Doctor Latina Gambles, a TUSVM small animal intern, traveled to Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, where they worked with the exotic animal housing unit, and the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, a multi-use events and equestrian facility, which is being used to house animals whose owners have not been traced.
Drs. Crowdis and Gambles also worked in a makeshift kennel known as Camp Milo & Otis. The kennel is aboard the U.S.S. Tortuga navy ship on emergency deployment to the Gulf Coast in support of disaster relief operations. Both doctors helped treat many of the pets for infection, dehydration, malnourishment, and broken bones at the camp last week.
Beatriz Perez, a third year TUSVM student, initiated a donation drive for hurricane-affected victims. All food, clothing, and monetary donations are being given to the Tuskegee/Macon County Red Cross Chapter.
TUSVM alumni, faculty, interns, and students are planning more trips to help people and pet victims of Hurricane Katrina.
