How can we grow
I find that my community is far more worst than community it size or bigger in Arkansas and our leaders can not come up on a solution to this illness. We have a college and a University in our town, yet we have the least number of people with bachelor degrees then towns our size with a college. We have a significantly higher crime rate and unemployment rate compared to those towns as well. Those are just symptoms to our illness.
We have a government who has a limited scope and lack the understanding of economics and marketing. They want to build up the north side of Pine Bluff which is majority black and the area where the school is. But they do not want to create ordinances that restrict certain activities from doing business in that area. Why are there 3 liquor stores across the street from the university? Why are their 3 clubs withing 2 miles of the school? Those two organizations brings down the community and the school. The chancellor who most have dubbed and idiot had the opportunity to speak out against it and he didn't. About 4 of the last 30 murders happen across the street from the school, around the block or down the street from the school.
To clean up the area, the citizens need better a infrastructure in the area. That should be a zero tolerance area, where state local and city police combat crime stricter and swifter. On the main strip they promote better business from grocery stores to java restaurants with free wifi internet for the students. They should look to bring a book store in the area, a black historic and modern museum that encourage past and present works of painters, authors, photographers as well as teaching of black leaders and how our people help shape this country. We can give a sense of pride to our youths.
No out leaders are pushing for a water park, trolleys and more hole in the wall clubs that house the lowest class of citizens.
They are looking to revitalize downtown, but when they had the chance they folded. Nothing is down town but abandon buildings and crime prevention mechanism like the new courts and new jails and so on.
They frown on building up the southern side of town. Think about this. Yes it is more white and most middle class and upper middle class people live there but this is also where most business want to come. There is about 12 to 14 miles of interstate that runs right through the southern in of town. They are building a connector on it that should take use to Louisiana via interstate. We get more traffic there then we do in a week down town so why not build up that area, take the tax revenue and put it in building up your downtown area? I bet if they built about 5 to 8 miles south of the city roads, sewage systems and so on, they can attract more businesses to that area then they could downtown. They don't think like that. How can we go when the same people keeps talking about the same thing and no action is being done?

Brother please don't think your message haven't spoken to the hearts and minds of many students faced with the same issues within their communities. I for one am glad you spoke on it. You're completely right. Why is it going on unrecognized? Well for one many people speak on an issue but still haven't found that courage to act on thier plans of change. Hey there may not be many who will stand on the forefront against the issue with you. However, those who do including yourself will have the self assuring face that you did say something. CJ get out there and push the issue as far as the law will allow you.......Queens
