The Spelman College Gateway Program is for mature students, typically at least 25 years old and independent of their parents, who have the desire to return to a higher education environment.

A Gateway student is expected to demonstrate leadership and service and to excel academically. She may be a full-time student (enrolled in 12 to 18 semester credit hours) or a part-time student (enrolled in 1 to 11 credit hours). She may choose any major that is offered at Spelman. When enrolled, she will be assigned an advisor who will counsel her on the academic program she should follow. Upon completion of her studies, she will be awarded a bachelor's degree. Spelman does not offer programs leading to the master's degree.

Spelman offers evening courses each semester and Saturday courses occasionally. However, Gateway students must enroll in some daytime courses in order to complete their studies. Spelman does not offer weekend or accelerated programs. The Academic Program in the Spelman bulletin covers ways to receive credit for knowledge you already have through CLEP examinations and the Portfolio Assessment.

Generally, housing on campus is not available for Gateway students.

If you feel that Spelman will be the right college for you and that you will be the right student for Spelman, please submit your application and supporting documents well in advance of the deadline dates. Follow the application (PDF) instructions for Gateway or transfer students.

Application deadlines:
First Monday in April (for August enrollment) and first Monday in October (for January enrollment).

Dr. Pauline Drake is Dean of Continuing Education.
