SU’s Wanda Spurlock among 3 national nurse experts on care of older persons with dementia

BATON ROUGE - Dr. Wanda Raby Spurlock, an Associate Professor in Southern University’s School of Nursing, is one of three nurses recently selected in a nationwide search to identify nurse experts in the care of older persons with dementia.

Dr. Spurlock will be part of a partnership to develop a web-based assessment tool for Registered Nurses in nursing homes to assess their knowledge specific to the care of older persons with dementia.

She recently met with the project team members in Indianapolis, Indiana, at Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) headquarters in late September.

Dr. Spurlock has been extensively involved in dementia care for over 20 years. She is also recognized by the Alzheimer's Foundation of America as a distinguished “Excellence in Dementia Care Specialist” after completing a comprehensive training program in Mesa, Ariz., earlier this year.

Dr. Spurlock is also the 2009 recipient of the Louisiana Nursing Foundation and Louisiana State Nurses Association's Nightingale Award: “Outstanding Community Service by a Registered Nurse.”

The project is being funded by the STTI Foundation of Nursing- Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing partnership with the Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence.

The Hartford Foundation is America's leading philanthropy with a perpetual interest in aging and health. The goal of the foundation is to improve the nation's capacity to provide effective, affordable health care to its rapidly increasing older adult population.

More have 400,000 members have been inducted worldwide into STTI, and there are approximately 469 chapters located on college campuses in the U.S. and other countries. Dr. Spurlock served as the Charter President of the Nursing School's Tau Pi Chapter in 2006.
