Is My Hair Cut a Group Discussion?
A few years ago, my hair stylist du jour tried to convince me to cut more layers in my hair than I wanted. I already had soft layers in my hair that hung slightly below my shoulders. However, he wanted to go over-board and call it a "trim."
You would think that this would have been the age old story of the scissor-happy stylist and the scissor-averse client. But somehow, my hair cut went way beyond an A and B conversation into a group discussion amongst strangers. After over-hearing my apprehension about cutting the additional layers, the stylist in the next station chimed in, "I think more layers may help give you some more body." Then her client had to add her two cents, "See look at my hair. I love my layers."
I responded to the other client that her hair looked nice but I wanted something different. As I responded, I wondered why all these people felt compelled to voice their opinions about my hair since only I had to go home and comb it. Why did I even feel the need to justify my hair decisions?
I voiced my concerns but in the end the scissor-happy stylist and the peanut gallery won. I left with more of a new haircut than a trim.
