Huntsville, Ala. ---- Alabama A&M University is one of three historically black colleges or universities (HBCUs) in the state receiving funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help revitalize neighborhoods near their campuses, says Dr. Beverly Edmond, the University’s interim president.
HUD Secretary Steve Preston has announced that AAMU will received $700,000 as part of a special program designed to assist HBCUs in addressing community development issues in the neighborhoods surrounding their campuses. Overall, HUD awarded nearly $9 million to 13 HBCUs in the Southeast and the District of Columbia. Miles College in Birmingham and Stillman College in Tuscaloosa also received $700,000 each.
“I am pleased that HUD is continuing to play an important role in helping to support the neighborhoods that surround HBCUs like Alabama A&M,” commented Dr. Beverly Edmond, interim president.
The monies will help AAMU and other HBCUs develop programs aimed at revitalization, housing, economic development, and other services benefitting low- and moderate-income families. Various schools may use the funds to acquire real estate, demolish abandoned housing, provide homeownership assistance, support job training and placement, and rehabilitate properties to correct code violations.
