Jerome Alonzo Heard, Mr. LeMoyne-Owen College 2007-08, 2008-09, added another accomplishment to his resume by winning the fourth annual Mr. H.B.C.U. Kings Leadership Competition held in February at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Heard is a Senior Performance Arts major in the Division of Fine Arts and Humanities at LeMoyne-Owen. He won the crown by outperforming other campus kings from various HBCU’s across the country. He now holds the title of “Mr. HBCU 2008-2009 and has received a $1.500 scholarship award. “I am excited,” Heard told his advisor. “This is something great for me and for the College. This is a part of the idea that as LeMoyne-Owen College students, we are making our mark in the world.”
To win the competition, Heard and other campus kings were judged on oratorical and talent presentations, as well as on their response to an impromptu question. His advisor, Ms. Ruby Hardy-Minter, Professor of English said, “Mr. Heard exemplified superb elocution, poise, talent and professional deameanor.”
Each of the campus kings presented an oratory presentation on the topic, “Historically Black Colleges and Universities the cornerstones of African American history and culture-- Black males the catalyst for the survival of these great institutions.”
Mr. Heard topped other contestants in the competition and won the competition’s Mr. Oratorical award. In the Talent Category, he gave a strong showing by performing an original poetic monologue. His performance produced a standing applause from the audience.
Heard is an honor student who is a member of the LeMoyne-Owen Concert Choir, The Royal Connection of LeMoyne-Owen, The LeMoyne-Owen Gospel Choir, and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Heard won the crown over current campus kings from Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Howard University, Elizabeth City State University, Paine College, Talladega College, Lincoln University (Pennsylvania), Morgan State University, Maryland Eastern Shore University, and Winston Salem State University.
He will serve as the student ambassador, not only for all nationally historically black colleges and universities, but will serve in promoting future platform initiatives for the continued growth of his alma mater, LeMoyne- Owen College, in Memphis, Tennessee.
