Kentucky State wins SIAC SAAC Citizenship Award (916 hits)

Kentucky State University provided stellar service to their community en route to winning the second annual Student Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) Citizenship Award. Student Athletes from around the SIAC, through their S.A.A.C. programs, competed all year to acquire points to win the award by completing community service projects and other initiatives on their campus and in their community.

Kentucky State scored 44.5 points to take home the prestigious award. They completed numerous events to impact their community including hosting a YMCA Healthy Kids Health Fair, visiting the Kosairs Children’s Hospital and building homes in their community by participating in Habitat for Humanity. Student Athletes also paired up with local YMCAs to help set up, register and operate a 5K community fun walk and designated a home women’s basketball game to bring awareness to Breast Cancer through the WBA Think Pink Campaign.

KYSU at 2nd Street ElementaryAnother program that the KYSU student athletes created was a reading program where they read to Hearn Elementary School students an hour per week. They called the program TRACK, Thorobreds Reading and Connecting with Kids Reading Program. Their SAAC program also raised $500.00 for the SIAC and NCAA initiative program the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They also hosted the annual SIAC SAAC meeting during the SIAC Volleyball Championship and arranged to visit Second Street Elementary to assist 3rd grade students with their class work.

S.A.A.C. programs received points in four areas: Public Service, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Visits to hospitals, schools, retirement facilities, etc., and their attendance at the SIAC S.A.A.C meetings. For more information on SAAC please visit http://thesiac.com/siac-student-athlete-ad... or contact the SAAC programs at your local SIAC institution.

A student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Presently, there are separate national SAACs for NCAA Divisions I, II and III. NCAA legislation mandates that all member institutions have SAAC on their respective campuses. Further, NCAA legislation requires that all member conferences have SAAC.

The SIAC SAAC Citizenship Award started in 2007. Lane College won the inaugural award.
