Mississippi Valley State completed a three-game weekend sweep of Alcorn State on Saturday, beating the Braves 2-1 and 3-2 at Legion Field to clinch its third consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division title.
Valley (18-19, 17-4 SWAC) got a strong pitching performance from J.T. Stovall to take Game 1 and capitalized on four Alcorn errors to take Game 2.
Stovall allowed just one run on five hits and struck out five batters in six innings. Reliever Andrew Cuhna came in to close the door in the seventh and picked up the save. Rod Williams hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, and pinch-runner Kyle Latiolais scored the game-winning run in the sixth when Alcorn catcher Larry Pierce was unable to hold onto the ball during a collision at home plate.
In Game 2, Valley scored two runs in the sixth to overcome a 2-1 deficit.
