Independence Day (Leader's Toolkit #10) (1206 hits)

I'm not talking about July 4. This is today - the day you decide to cast off everything that's holding you back from wealth, happiness, love, prosperity, and success.

Independence... it's something everyone wants. Professionals talk about financial independence - not being tied down by debt and money. Women talk about being socially independent - not relying on someone else for their well being.

But what does independence really mean?

To depend upon someone, or something, is to have a mental expectation of how that person or event will affect your life.

I depend upon my car to help me arrive safely at my destination. When I turn the key, I expect that I'll be able to travel much further than I could on foot.

Dependence can be helpful and harmful. When we connect our mental, physical, and emotional health to the actions of someone or something else, we gain nothing and lose everything.

Dependence turns gifts into curses. Some of us let a job, which was once a blessing, turn into a curse, by neglecting our ability to spend wisely and think creatively. Instead, we depend totally on our employer. That dependence is what creates sleepless nights spent thinking about bills and obligations.

The relationship which was a blessing turns into a curse when we lose our self-respect and individuality. Then we feel tied to someone who is moving in our opposite direction spiritually and intellectually.

We become attached to so many things... friends, money, image, status, habits, fears.

Today, declare independence. Stop letting these things back you into a mental corner. Don't be afraid to detach from the material and emotional dead weight that's holding you back, and causing stress and disruption in your life.

Just walk away. Recognize that there are some things that you'll just be better off without. If the people around you can't respect that, leave them behind too.

Today is your own personal independence day. Imagine being able to just let go, and stop worrying. Now imagine that feeling every day for the rest of your life. It's already yours. Declare independence.
