
Gold Rush leads the way in GCAC coaches poll

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana was picked to finish first in the 2007-08 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball standings, according to a preseason coaches poll announced Thursday.
The Gold Rush, which was 22-10 in 2006-07 and shared the GCAC regular-season title with Tougaloo, received seven of 10 first-place votes and 79 points. LSU-Shreveport, winner of the last two GCAC tournaments, was second with 67 points. LSUS, third-place Mobile and fourth-place Tougaloo received one first-place vote apiece.
Xavier will attempt to win consecutive GCAC regular-season championships for the first time since the league's first two seasons, 1981-82 and 1982-83.
Xavier will visit Texas in a Friday, Nov. 2 exhibition, then open the season at home on Tuesday, Nov. 6 against Wesley (Miss.). The GCAC opener will be Thursday, Jan. 3 at Belhaven, and the GCAC home opener will be Thursday, Jan. 10 against SUNO.
