Is Greek Life Incompatible With Christianity?

"Stomping the yard" with desired colors and Greek letters.

Leading the university in community service projects.

Throwing the biggest parties of the year.

Lending a helping hand to fellow members.

Greek-lettered organizations. Their purpose and function can become blurred not only in the eyes of the university, but with its members.

Is Greek life compatible with Christianity?

Recently, a debate over Greek-lettered organizations and their relationship to Christianity has emerged — a debate that goes back at least to the mid-1980s.

The campus of Prairie View A & M University in Prairie View, Texas, experienced this debate firsthand and with full effect: The president of the campus chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., stepped down and denounced his membership in the organization.

The events began with an opinion piece in the student newspaper, the Panther, "Why God wants you to denounce your letters."

A student anonymously urged others to denounce their Greek letters or steer clear of Greek-lettered organizations.

He said fraternities and sororities were "idols to themselves and to people who long to be a member of them." He said these organizations take the place of God in some people’s hearts because they spend time "worshiping" the organizations and not God.

The student said, "demons used the founders of secret societies and Greek/Egyptian organizations to create a stronghold for young people for years to come." He claimed these demons purposely work against the will of God.

"Organizations encourage members as well as potential members to dedicate all their time and efforts to their success," he said, which conflicts with God's will.

The debate lasted until the semester’s end. In response to "Why God wants you to denounce your letters," the Panther published, "Why God is ONE with my letters."

The author of that piece, B.J. O'Neal, summarized the opposing arguments as "a common mishap that occurs when religious people err in their understandings or over-interpret human action as it relates to historical events documented in the Bible." He argued that people should realize that "the true intentions of Greek organizations are in fact aligned with what God would have his people doing."

O'Neal supported his statements by citing personal experiences and Bible verses.

Fuel was added to the fire when the president of the Eta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Asad Abdul-Salaam, stepped down and denounced his fraternity membership. Abdul-Salaam wrote, "Why I denounced my letters."

Abdul-Salaam condemned Greek images and symbols, and called the rituals "anti-Christian."

"Asad was a great president," said Mark Anthony Williams II, the new president of the Eta Gamma Chapter. "He was somebody that I truly looked up to and still do. It takes bravery to work hard and to get somewhere but also to step down due to religious reasons. I don’t know a lot of people that would do that."

"We, as Alphas, don’t look at him differently. We don’t talk about him behind his back. I still love Asad to death," Williams said. "If he believes his walk with God will be greater, it’s not for us to judge. Asad is not a sporadic guy; it was something well thought out."

However, Williams said, "I personally know a lot of people that are extremely involved in church — preachers, deacons, mothers — and it’s all about how you personally portray your letters," he said. "Your organization may be flawed, but you can try to help it become better and [get] back to its original intent."

Williams said it would be better to have written about how Greek life has digressed from its original path.

The Rev. Kenneth I. Clarke Sr., a member of Alpha Phi Alpha and director of Cornell United Religious Work at Cornell University, traces the current debate to such ministers as Frederic Hatchett and Gail Gray, who condemn Greek-lettered organizations.

Hatchett is the founder of the Web site www.dontgogreek.com and author of "Coming Apart at the Seams: Biblically Unravelling the Evils of Sororities and Fraternities." On his Web site, he claims to have 21 years of "experience" with Greek-lettered organizations, "six years as an outsider looking in, five as an insider, 10 and counting as a born again, denounced member."

Hatchett says the origin of these organizations can be found in the "Ancient Cults of Babylon," which can be proved in "SEVEN undeniable similarities between Ancient Babylonian Cults and Greek Organizations today."

Gray is the author of "Greek-Letter Organizations: Offspring of Abomination." Her mission is to teach about "the spiritual conflict surrounding Christian membership within secret societies," according to her Web site, www.gailgray.com.

Clarke says of these critics, "They take text [from the Bible] that supports their case with a snip of a ritual and say it's evidence. You can’t take a quote out of an initiation without putting it into context," Clarke said.

Clarke said he finds this difficult to do if you have not been a part of a Greek-letter organization because, he said, members understand the symbolism behind the rituals.

"For example, I shouldn’t know what a Kappa ritual means as an Alpha any more than a Kappa should know about Alpha’s rituals," he said.

He also said, "some of the language of the rituals are used symbolically and not to be taken literally."

He maintains that some rituals have been handed down throughout history and have historical references or references to African culture.

"I have never had to make a decision between Alpha Phi Alpha and my faith," Clarke said. "No one is asked to serve something else other than God, just have a commitment to your organization."

Clarke said he is concerned that this debate will affect younger members who do not have tight grasp on their organization’s history or black history.

Thus, Clarke says it is essential for older members and graduate members to converse with the younger ones and help them to have a better grasp of their organization’s past and of the purposes on which they were founded.

"These arguments are problematic," he said. "Christianity, as well as other religions, are most potent, most transformative when they clarify what they stand for as opposed to misguided interpretations of faith that speak about what they are against."

My Dream

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DREAM
I was at Bishop TD Jakes' Church when he took my hand, stretched forth my fingers, and yelled into my hand, “JESUS!!!” He looked out amongst the congregation and told them to bless me. As the people passed me, they would place in my hand cash and checks. Several white people passed and I was privy to there conversation. They commented that Bishop Jakes was a pimp. After they passed a young lady approached me writing a check. When I glanced at her the second time her Sunday attire had changed into Greek paraphernalia. She was wearing Delta Sigma Theta paraphernalia from head to toe. I told her I had something to tell her and she was not going to like it. She backed up and said, “Don’t tell me I don’t want to hear it!” I than began to share with her my testimony about my deliverance from Greek associations. She handed me the check and walked away distraught.

INTERPRETATION by Prophetess Lisa James

The Father’s Blessing

Early in church history, apostolic fathers such as Paul imparted grace and giftings into their spiritual sons. Apostolic fathers were instrumental in helping the next generation discover their passions, creativity, giftings, and anointings. Bishop Jakes is embraced as a contemporary apostolic father in the Body of Christ. The dream illustrates a powerful principle about the dynamics of a spiritual father and son relationship. Spiritual fathers help shape their sons prophetic destiny in manifold ways. The dream clearly points to three areas of influence and investment in the life of a spiritual son:

1) Spiritual fathers identify the gifts within their spiritual sons
2) Spiritual fathers disciple sons in their calling and labor to see Christ formed in their character and life
3) Spiritual fathers speak to the dead, barren and unproductive areas of their sons lives and align them to receive the Father’s blessing (demonstrated when Bishop yells Jesus over what was in your hand)

You are entering a season of divine connections. You will submit to the Father’s correction and counsel for your life through the voice of a spiritual father. This connection will lead to the further unfolding of your prophetic purpose and destiny. The dream reveals that the Creator is ready to endow what is in your hand (which includes your life, ministry, and destiny). The Lord desires for a spiritual father to speak to the blind spots in your life that you may grow in wisdom, stature and in favor with God and men (see Luke 2:52). Sons that seek God and His righteousness are properly positioned to receive gracious endowments and blessings from their heavenly Father.

Favor Aint’ Fair

The Lord desires to increase your influence in your family, your community, and in the Church. The dream reveals that your heavenly Father will release the next wave of favor into your life once you are aligned to receive spiritual insight from your spiritual father whose role is to help shape your life and ministry for this next outpouring. When you stretched forth your fingers as the man of God commanded you, it was your willingness to submit yourself to a father’s instruction that unlocked this new dimension of increase and favor in the dream. Mighty man of valor, the hand of the Lord is strong upon you in this season and the dream was given to encourage you in this next season to embrace the mentoring plan the Father has elected for you which ultimately is designed to bring you into greater fruitfulness and abundance. The scriptures states it like this, “For it is God that gives you power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which He swore unto your fathers.” The Lord is empowering your life through a covenant relationship that will serve to remove flesh or anything that impedes the flow of the anointing into your life. You are embarking upon a journey that will bring you into your prophetic Goshen. You will know you have arrived when you have found favor with both God and men. The ridiculous season of favor that is coming to you will undoubtedly cause many to take inventory of their own lives and pursue a deeper consecration with the
Lord of the harvest. Many will complain that your increase is unmerited. Many will claim the Lord is not fair when He promotes you over others that feel they have been more faithful than yourself. The Father is just in glorifying His name through a broken and yielded vessel that just happens to be you.

Haters and Destiny Slayers
The law of reciprocity is in full effect in your life. Luke 6:38 paraphrased simply states that Lord has made you a steward of what He has placed in your hands. When you invest what is in your hands into the kingdom of God the Father commands the blessing over your life. The blessing will provoke men to give into your passions (translated from bosoms to mean passions) so you may have the resources and influences to build and advance the kingdom of God. The flip side of this principle is that negative emotions will impede the flow of life. The dream reveals hidden critical and judgmental attitudes that you have toward some men in leadership. The Father exposes these hidden prejudices so you can take inventory and rid your spirit of any toxic emotions that will cause you to miss your divine connection. The white people who questioned Bishop’s integrity is that side of you that has had negative experiences with men in authority (this includes biological relations as well). The Father is ready to confront past issues as it relates to authority abuse and the long term effects that it has had in your life. This is the season to heal from past disappointments that you may embrace with passion and great expectancy the things the Father will impart into your life through covenant relationships.

Dreamer, you are admonished in the dream not to let familiar ties (associations and leagues with others) cause you to miss the best the Father has for you in this life time. The distraught lady in the Greek paraphernalia represents familiar church traditions and philosophies (DST comes from an old Greek philosophy) that many will struggle with breaking their allegiance from if they are to reclaim their prophetic destinies. The old religious mindsets lure many into a false sense of deliverance and freedom. The dream warns you not to hold to old paradigms that foster an atmosphere of counterfeit blessings. The old garments that kept you entrapped in cycles of defeat and despair are being removed in this season. Man of God the Father promise to you is that every blessing He adds to you will make you rich and is guaranteed not to add any sorrow with it. Dreamer, the haters and destiny slayers that threaten your future are strongholds of the mind and impurities of the spirit. Be vigilant in eradicating the enemies of your soul. Your loving Father is sending a spiritual father that will help to posture you according to godly character and purpose that you may expand your borders and increase on EVERY side. In the infamous words of Bishop Jakes, “Get ready, get ready, get ready……,” to multiply, increase, and overflow.

Equipped to properly handle the favor of the Lord,
Prophetess Lisa James

The question is: "IF" it is incompatible, then what are you going to do about it? This may also apply with belonging to a church, your job, family, etc. You will find people doing the wrong things no matter where you go, but it is up to you to decide whether to participate in things that can harm you. There are families who are cons, co-workers who steal on the job, church members who use facades and are the opposite behind closed doors.

Overall isn't Jesus forgiving; we as human beings are capable of commiting horrendous acts, but God is merciful. We are also capable of commiting great acts of goodness. Life is always changing, and people can change if they have the will and make a difference by doing what is good for them mentally, emotinally, physically, intellectually, and spiritually. If there is an issue, then correct it so we can live peaceful and fruitful lives.

Pagan Practices in the Temple
EZEKIAL 8
5 The LORD said to me, "Son of man, look toward the north." I looked to the north, and there was this offensive statue north of the altar gate, at the entrance. 6 He said to me, "Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great abominations that the house of Israel is committing here, so that I must depart from My sanctuary? You will see even greater abominations."
7 Then He brought me to the entrance of the court, and when I looked there was a hole in the wall. 8 He said to me, "Son of man, dig through the wall." So I dug through the wall, and there was a doorway. 9 He said to me, "Go in and see the terrible abominations they are committing here." 10 I went in and looked, and there engraved all around the wall was every form of detestable thing, crawling creatures and beasts, as well as all the idols of the house of Israel.

11 Seventy elders from the house of Israel were standing before them, with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan standing among them. Each had an incense burner in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense was rising up. 12 Then He said to me, "Son of man, do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his idol? For they are saying: The LORD does not see us. The LORD has abandoned the land." 13 Again He said to me, "You will see even greater abominations, which they are committing."

14 So He brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the LORD's house, and I saw women sitting there weeping for Tammuz. 15 And He said to me, "Do you see [this], son of man? You will see even greater abominations than these."

16 So He brought me to the inner court of the LORD's house, and there were about 25 men at the entrance of the LORD's temple, between the portico and the altar, with their backs to the LORD's temple and their faces [turned] to the east. They were bowing to the east in worship of the sun. 17 And He said to me, "Do you see [this], son of man? Is it not enough for the house of Judah to commit the abominations they are practicing here, that they must also fill the land with violence and repeatedly provoke Me to anger, even putting the branch to their nose? 18 Therefore I will respond with wrath. I will not show pity or spare [them]. Though they cry out in My ears with a loud voice, I will not listen to them."
