When Johnie L. Jones, III, enrolled in Prairie View A&M University’s Pre College Program in 2005, everyone believed he was destined for greatness.
Johnie is a sophomore majoring in Agriculture Economics and plan on making that belief a reality as he throws his hat in the ring to become only the 3rd student to be elected to the Prairie View City Council. Jones announced his candidacy for Position 3 because, “I feel that since the students are part of the city, the students should have representative on the council. My goal is to close the bridge that divides the community and the students so that we can work together for the betterment of Prairie View as a ‘communiversity.’”
When asked what qualifies him for the position, Jones says, “I bring leadership and fresh new ideas to complement the leadership that’s presently on the council. However, I believe that my energy, vision and concern for the growth of the city to complement the growth of the university put me in a better position to affect change. I am student and a resident of Prairie View so I have first hand view of the needs of the students.”
As the new Vice President of the Student Government Association (SGA), Johnie believes that he could represent the students’ interest to maximum because his responsibilities as Vice President include addressing students’ issues. “The leadership experiences gained from the various student organizations on and off campus helped to prepare me for this important step to give back to the community,” stated Mr. Jones. You can say that Jones got his early preparation for civil service from his grandmother, Catherine Thomas, who served as Mayor of Tollette, Arkansas in the mid-eighties.
Johnie is the immediate President of the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team at the university. SIFE is a global organization with more than 1800 teams on college campuses around the world. Other positions held by Jones include, Vice President for Finance of the SGA, charter member of the Frederick Douglass Leadership Institute, Chaplain for Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANNRS), a member of the NAACP, Career Ambassador and president of his own company, FBM’2, a company dedicated to developing the next generation of Black Millionaires.
Taking a hint from ‘big mama’ Thomas, Jones is campaigning on the theme that “progress through cooperation” is the key to closing the gap in making a better community for all.
The election is set for May 12, 2007 with early voting running from May 7-8, 2007. Johnie urges the public to go out and vote and participate in the political process.
