Steven R. Amacher has Been Inducted Into the National Honor Society!! (1015 hits)

Since becoming a member of HBCUConnect.com I've written and expressed my opinions on many different subjects. I've shared with many young persons that there are CHOICES in life. The choices that any of us make will, in part, determine our future. I want to take a moment now to share a personal story that, perhaps, may inspire or encourage other single mothers and fatherless sons. (Death isn't the only circumstance that constitutes a child fatherless. A father who is living, yet absent in a child's life as well as a father who, while present, shows little or no regard for a child's emotional, physical, mental, spiritual and educational well-being render the child fatherless.)

Many of the articles that I wrote or either contributed to this site evoked a range of emotions; happiness and joy, sadness and pain in myself as well as in some of you. However, I must confess that submitting those articles did not bring me nearly as much happiness and joy as this one does.

Eighteen years ago I had the exquisite pleasure of meeting a beautiful baby boy whose very existence brought out the best in me. This baby gave me that warm, fuzzy connected feeling that only a newborn baby can give. He gave me a joy so intense that each time I looked into those beautiful brown eyes I saw and felt unwavering trust and unconditional love.

His father and I felt as though God had put everything that is good and beautiful into this baby's smile, into his heart. We adored our son. Sadly, as is the case in life, tragedy struck our seemingly perfect world. My world as I knew it then was shattered by the loss of my dear friend and husband. Two beautiful babies, 2 and a half year old Steven and 5 month old Blake lost their wonderful father....

Over the past 15 years I have dealt with many losses and major adversities. Through it all I have persevered and with much determination and faith in our Heavenly Father Yahweh, I raised my two wonderful babies into wonderful, handsome young men. Truly 'during my times of trial and suffering, when I saw only one set of footprints, it was then that HE carried me.'

But, you all know what? It's more than that for me. It's my own family commending me on this long hard journey and it's strangers coming up to me saying 'Your sons are really awesome young men!' Teachers' eyes well up with tears as they speak of Steven's accomplishments. To be sure, there are no finer moments in life than when others notice and commend your hard work in raising your child.

So, for just a moment, I would like to speak to my son:

"Steven, you, my son, have been my indescribable joy. You have NEVER given me a moment's grief. How many mothers and fathers can make that claim? You have carried yourself through high school, indeed through life, in a manner that speaks of your self-worth, self-confidence and self-esteem. You have honored the values and principles you were taught. You have made me so proud. If your Father were here he would weep.. he would be so proud....for truly no Father could ask for a more remarkable son.

Mother and Dad (Gran'ma and Papa Jack) if they were here, would be equally proud of you....I know that you know that, sweetheart, but, I felt the need to say it on their behalf." : )

Yes, HBCUConnect members, I am in tears as I write this. You cannot know how deep my love for my son runs. You see, society's qualitative data purports and perpetuates the belief that young African-American males raised in single parent households (more specifically by single mothers) are destined for failure not success. Incarceration, not education is the future of young African-American males raised by single mothers is what THEY say.

THEY say that the absence of a male role model, more specifically, the absence of a father in a single parent family, somehow, suggests educational ineptitude on the part of the young male.

I beg to differ. I have a few statistics of my own. Please keep reading.

I'll stop there or it might seem like this mother is boasting. ; ) ; )

I am humbled today, Father, as I thank you for all of your goodness and love. I am humbled today as I thank you for the guidance that you have shown me in raising my sons. I am humbled today as I ask for your CONTINUED guidance as I fulfill my responsibility as a parent toward Blake who's right behind his brother... arm outstretched as he reaches for the academic baton Steven so dutifully passes on to him.

Congratulations to Steven R. Amacher, my son, my joy, my heart!!

Always,
Tressia

I'm at work crying with ya! I just had a second to get on and connect, so I picked the right tidbit to read. Don't stop boasting in Steven, I'm proud of him too, just from your words!
