(Leader's Survival Guide #5)

What is the most intimidating place on earth?

At the bottom of a mountain, looking up.

Starting at the beginning of anything is the most difficult part of any journey, simply because of the psychological fear that comes with seeing what lies ahead.

We unfortunately live in a society where people are unwilling to start from the first step. The entry level job which could lead to greater wealth and respect is beneath us. The man with few possessions and a modest home "doesn't have it together". The aspiring businessman is turned away time and time again for lack of experience.

How many opportunities have we missed because we weren't able to see that step as the first one in a successful venture?

Too many times, we and our loved ones suffer because we weren't courageous enough to be the first to make a move. The one to organize the community meeting, or clean up the trash on the street, or pitch in at the school.

Too often, we wait for someone else to do the hard part. When we do, we lose the opportunity to have a real stake in the results. Whether in a relationship, your family, your career, or your community, respect is gained by having the strength to get involved when times are hard.

Today, remember that it's OK to start at square one. And once you do, the path ahead is always getting shorter, and the struggle behind you is always getting farther away.
