NCCU WILL PRESENT EVE ENSLER’S THE ****** MONOLOGUES

DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University (NCCU) will present Eve Ensler’s The ****** Monologues Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24 in the B.N. Duke Auditorium at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

Sponsored by the NCCU Women’s Center, the play is directed by Obsede Copeland and the cast is made up of NCCU women students and administrators. Proceeds from this community event will be donated to the North Carolina Coalition Against s*xual Assault.

Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant" and by the Daily News as "intelligent" and "courageous," The ****** Monologues, which was first performed off-Broadway by Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences. Ensler has performed the play to great acclaim throughout the world - from Zagreb to Santa Barbara, from London to Seattle, from Jerusalem to Oklahoma City. Villard Books/Random House first published The ****** Monologues, which includes a foreword by Gloria Steinem, in February 1998. A special V Day edition of the play was released in February 2001.

V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and s*xual slavery. The 'V' in V-Day stands for victory, valentine and ******.

This year’s theme is “Reclaiming Peace” celebrating new activists and leaders who are working to end violence against women in their communities. ****** Warriors are the women and men, who have often experienced violence personally or witnessed it within their communities and dedicated themselves toward ending such violence through effective, grassroots means,

“V-Day’s mission is simple, said Dr. Frances Graham, NCCU’s associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs. “It demands that the violence must end. When all women live in safety, no longer fearing violence or the threat of violence, then V-Day will be known as Victory Over Violence Day.”

V-Day NCCU is a local effort within the worldwide context of V Day’s 2007 College Campaign. The College Campaign is a catalyst for mobilizing college communities to heighten awareness about violence against women and girls. By creating this global community, the College Campaign strives to empower women to find their collective voices and demand an end to the epidemic levels of violence and abuse on their campuses and around the world.
