"Can't Blame Whie People" by Bill Cosby (1417 hits)

Hello to all, I received this article today. I have admired Bill Cosby over the years in what he has done for black people. I have not agreed nor been for the comments of Author Michael Eric Dyson who I feel has used the comments of Mr. Cosby for recognition. I am just curious as to how you the reader if you would comment on what Bill Cosby has been quoted as saying. This is the 1st time I have had what Mr. Cosby has stated in full in which I do not honestly disagree, but there may be some exaggeration in Mr. Cosby's comments using all inclusive statements. Not all black people are in error, but I do say there is enough of them...:

Can't Blame White People
by Bill Cosby
NAACP leaders stunned by remarks of prominent comedian. This is why!!

They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk: Why you ain't, Where you is, What he drive, Where he stay, Where he work, Who you be... And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. Everybody knows it's important to speak English... except these knuckleheads. Mushmouth is what they speak!

You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth. In fact you will never get any kind of job making a decent living. People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education, and now we've got these knuckleheads throwing that all away. The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids. $500 sneakers for what? And they won't spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics. I am talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were you when he was 2? Where were you when he was 12? Where were you when he was 18?

And, how come you didn't know that he had a pistol? And where is the father? Or who is his father? People putting their clothes on backward: Isn't that a sign of something gone wrong? People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn't that a sign of something? They're walking around with their nasty underwear showing, and holding onto their pants to keep them from falling to the ground! Or are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up? Isn't it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up to her panty line, and got all types of needle piercings going through her body?

What part of Africa did this come from? We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans; they don't know a thing about Africa. With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua and Mohammed and all of that crap, and all of them are in jail. Brown or black versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person's problem. We have got to take the neighborhood back.

People used to be ashamed. Today a woman has eight children with eight different 'husbands' -- or men or whatever you call them now. We have millionaire football players who cannot read. We have million-dollar basketball players who can't write two paragraphs. We as black folks have to do a better job. Someone working at Wal-Mart with seven kids saying... you are hurting us. We have to start holding each other to a higher standard. We cannot blame the white people any longer. It is not for media or anyone of this time anymore to say whether I'm right or wrong. It is time, ladies and gentlemen, to look at the numbers. Fifty percent of our children are dropping out of high school. Sixty percent of the incarcerated males happen to be illiterate. There's a correlation. Tell the media to stop asking me what I think about people who don't believe what I'm saying or feel that I'm too harsh or feel that I'm just running my mouth because I'm old. Seventy percent of the teenagers pregnant happen to be African American girls.

Don't ask me to soften my message.

~ Bill Cosby

I think Bill Cosby hit the nail on the head. I respect his honesty. We have lost so much... community, morality, respect, honor. Everything Bill Cosby said is accurate!

Hi Brenda, appreciate the comments and I know it's not always easy to take a stance on what is the truth and though there are various reasons, Mr. Cosby did tell one aspect of the truth and I say who has given more money and done more things for the black community (not the only 1 but a part of the whole).
We are the only group or culture of people where everyone else defines us and offers solutions we need to deal with. The one of the last times this was done was around 40 years ago when people united through M.L.K. and Malcolm X. What Mr. Cosby speaks out on is what we see as black people everyday and those who are guilty ignore the fact that the world sees them in the way they carry themselves, dress etc. So when someone speaks out on it, there is outrage by a few??? Ironic. Those who speak out against what are they doing about the problem except make a name for themselves at the expense of Mr. Cosby. I say how many people as Mr. Dyson has done beneficial t.v. (Fat Albert and the 1st black to star on t.v. in I Spy), given countless millions to HBCU's etc.?
I can go on all day, I would love to be able to be Blessed to debate Mr. Dyson...
Be who you are Sis, the world needs your Destined/Greatness as well. How many stand up anymore vs. those who just go with the flow?

Sometime the truth really hurts. I applaud my frat brother for standing up for telling the truth.

We are our own worst enemy. The days of blaming whites for the vast majority of our ills is over.

Cosby is not implying that this country is perfect. He is telling us to wake up and realize what is happening around us.

We need to call ourselves to task. Why is our teen pregnancy rate so high? Why are our HS droputs so low? Why is black male enrollment in higher education so low? Why do we score so low on standardized tests? Why are jails filled with black males? Why do we allow our black males with "saggy pants" to "court" our daughters and continue the circle of madness?

When will we wake up and stop licking our wounds. The effect of 500 years of oppression is still lingering but are we willing to take a stand and fight for our 40 acres and our mule.

Hey Wassup Toney, hey man appreciate the deep and very valid replies. These are some of the questions that must be addressed, ' We need to call ourselves to task. Why is our teen pregnancy rate so high? Why are our HS dropouts so low? Why is black male enrollment in higher education so low? Why do we score so low on standardized tests? Why are jails filled with black males? Why do we allow our black males with "saggy pants" to "court" our daughters and continue the circle of madness? '
The truth sets free and we have to stop masking true problems in our community with excuses that cultures such as Hollywood now embrace, promote and too many of us follow like robots for the continuance of problems and destruction of a people. Wonder why most rap groups are lets just say owned by certain cultures? But hey they are speaking truth right? Riiiiiiiight..........

Hey Ms. SC! Sis, what you powerfully expound upon... What can one add but amen and not taking anything away from all the other great responses here alone. Your comments amongst others can be a blog all by themselves. Just have to give credit where it is due. Thank you for your comments and that man for you I must say has an awesome woman for him and equally he has to be a heck of a man for you. Just have to give credit where it is due i.e. Hebrews 10:25
Hope to see more of your blogs, keep up the great work as well as to all the rest.
In the last part of your reply I admit they are deep and gives us something else to expound upon, but w/o debate I have to say we know our problems and what we are up against and the Bible does state about starting at home first.
This would be a good positive debate for us to professionally deal with Sis.
Appreciate the courage to speak up. Honestly I never looked at things from your perspective you bring up here against Mr. Cosby, but, I still like watching Fat Albert when I can catch it and loved it as a youth (^;^)
