NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY HOSTS HIP HOP SUMMIT FEATURING INDIVIDUALS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
DURHAM, N.C. * North Carolina Central University (NCCU) announces its line up for its second annual Hip Hop Summit February 9 * 10, 2007. The two-day summit will feature panel discussions with noted professionals in the music industry.
The following is short biographical information on some the guest speakers as well as the schedule of the Hip Hop Summit.
Michael “Blue” Williams will be the keynote speaker on Friday, February 9, beginning at 4 p.m. in B.N. Duke Auditorium. Williams is the founder and CEO of Family Tree Entertainment. Currently, he oversees the management for NAS, Nick Cannon, Xzibit and Keith Murray.
His career in the entertainment field began back in 1991, when he made the conscious decision to leave his undergrad career at Central State University. Throughout his excursion, he’s become a know-how at solving problems and managing situations, so much so, he’s even adapted the nickname Mr. Manager along the way.
Edward M. Garnes, Jr. is the founder of From Afros to Shelltoes: Art, Action, and Conversation, a nationally acclaimed series of cultural productions confronting the social divide between elders and Hip Hop heads. His seminal essay, Sweet Tea Ethics: Black Luv, Healthcare, and Cultural Mistrust, currently appears in Not In My Family: AIDS in the African American Community, a 2007 NAACP Image Award nominated collection edited by Gil Robertson. Garnes' film and television credits include Finally Sayin' What I Really Mean, a feature length music documentary featuring Jill Scott, Common, and Saul Williams, and the Black Family Channel's Spoken, a poetry program hosted and produced by Jessica Care Moore.
The award winning writer, activist, and educator holds a B.A. in English writing from DePauw University and a M.A. in counseling from Michigan State University. A longtime music contributor to Creative Loafing, Garnes has profiled and interviewed such cutting edge artists as Spike Lee, Outkast, Erykah Badu, and Gerald Levert.
Indiana jazz legend Bassist Extraordinaire Dr. Larry Ridley was born and reared in Indianapolis, IN. He began performing professionally while still in high school in the 1950s and has toured, recorded and performed with many of the historical legends of jazz. His credits are a virtual Who’s Who in Jazz, e.g., Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Dinah Washington, Coleman Hawkins, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, Lee Morgan, Gerald Wilson, Clark Terry, Randy Weston and many other internationally known musicians.
Ridley served as chairman of the Jazz Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and was the organization's National Coordinator of the Jazz Artists in Schools Program for five years. He is the executive director of the African American Jazz Caucus, Inc., an affiliate of the International Association for Jazz Education.
