SUMMIT AT NCCU TO FEATURE MC LYTE, DOUG E. FRESH AND DANA DANE IN CONCERT
DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University (NCCU) announced today that Hip Hop artists MC LYTE, Doug E. Fresh and Dana Dane will perform during its Hip Hop Concert scheduled for Saturday, February 10, 2007, at 8 p.m. in McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.
The concert is a part of NCCU’s annual Hip Hop Summit scheduled Feb. 9 -10, 2007, which includes the concert, film festival, and curriculum development seminars for primary and secondary teachers. Among the panelists are representatives from MTV, Sirius Satellite Radio, Essence Magazine and Allhiphop.com.
“We are excited about our concert line up,” said Kawachi Clemons, director of NCCU’s Hip Hop Initiative. “We believe that it will be a concert to remember. These artists are some of the pioneers in Hip Hop and are great entertainers.”
Tickets for the concert are on sale on-line through NCCU’s Ticket Office - general admission, $20 in advance and $25 at the door; and students $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
Reared in Brooklyn, New York, MC LYTE is keeping her finger on Hip Hop’s pulse. She is the first rap artist ever to perform at Carnegie Hall and the first female rapper to ever receive a gold single.
MC LYTE’s inspiring 1993 anthem, the classic “Ruffneck,” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Single. In fact she was the first female solo rapper ever nominated for a Grammy. Her latest album “Undaground Heat vol.1, hosted by Jamie Foxx”, (2003) garnered this rap legend her second career Grammy nomination 10 years later on her own label SGI/CMM. The single “Ride Wit Me” also received a BET award nomination for Best Female rap performance.
Her newest musical offering, “BACK TO LYTE” which has a smash single “WONDER YEARS,” is produced by DJ PREMIER. To date, MC LYTE has released ten albums and has co-written and performed the television theme songs for Fox’s “Dark Angel” and BET’s “Holla.”
Dubbed the "World's Greatest Entertainer" for his unrivaled ability to rock a crowd, Harlem native Doug E. Fresh began his musical career at age 13. The originator of the human beat box (vocally simulating the sound of drums and other musical instruments), he spawned an international Hip Hop trend. Best known for the two-sided, multi-platinum hits "The Show" and "La Di Da Di," he was the first rapper to play Africa and the Caribbean.
Throughout his 20-year career, Fresh has collaborated with the world's top artists. He has performed or recorded with fellow rap legends, including Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, Eminem, P. Diddy and Dr. Dre.
Brooklyn's own, Dana McCleese has not only established himself as an innovator in rap music, but as a rapper with the ability to move with the times, while maintaining his own distinctive style and flavor.
Since his humble beginnings in the lunchroom of New York's prestigious Music & Art High School, to the streets of Brooklyn's Fort Greene Projects where he perfected his craft, Dana has always had a certain star quality that would ultimately make him a household name in the Hip Hop world.
In high school, he would join another up and coming rapper by the name of Slick Rick and form the Kango Crew (which also included Kool-Alski, The Man-Lance Brown and Omega the Heart Breaker). Shortly after entering college, Dana decided to give the music industry a real shot. This decision was based partly on the overwhelming success that childhood friends Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew were experiencing at the time.
Dana Dane landed a record deal and released his first single, "Nightmares." It was an instant hit with fans everywhere. He wrote, arranged, mixed and collaborated with producers Clark Kent and Hurby Luv Bug, (of Salt 'n Pepa fame), in co-producing the gold selling album "Dana Dane with Fame." This album also yielded the Hip Hop Classic "Cinderfella," and led to a Soul Train Award nomination for Rap Artist of the Year.
Dana Dane is currently a voice talent on nationwide Sirius Satellite Radio’s Classic Hip Hop Backspin channel 43, Mondays - Fridays in the morning.
The Hip Hop Summit at NCCU is designed to assess the state of Hip Hop in the African-American community and provide area college students with a greater understanding of the new developments in the industry and how to break into the business.
