2006 SBN Sports Black College All-American Team announced

Pittsburgh, PA – American Urban Radio Networks is proud to announce the award-winning members of the 2006 SBN Sports Black College All-American (BCAA) Team, to be honored during the annual BCAA Awards Weekend February 16-17, 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Hampton University Pirates lead the way with five players selected as members of the 2006 SBN Sports Black College All-American Team. North Carolina Central University quarterback Stadford Brown was named “SBN Sports Doug Williams Offensive Player of the Year,” Hampton University linebacker Justin Durant was named “SBN Sports Mel Blount Defensive Player of the Year” and North Carolina Central University Head Coach Rod Broadway was named “SBN Sports Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year.”

Stadford Brown, North Carolina Central University, “SBN Sports Doug Williams Offensive Player of the Year” – During the season, the freshman quarterback from Washington, D.C., completed 174 of 321 passes for 2577 yards and 26 touchdowns. He was voted CIAA Offensive Player of the Year after being selected CIAA Rookie of the Week six times during the season. Brown led the Eagles to an undefeated regular season, the second round of the NCAA Division Two Playoffs and their first-ever SBN Black College National Championship..

Justin Durant, Hampton University, “SBN Sports Mel Blount Defensive Player of the Year” – A three-time winner of this coveted award, Durant led the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with 98 total tackles, including 65 solo stops. The senior linebacker from Florence, South Carolina, also had 13 tackles for loss, a sack, five pass breakups and a fumble recovery for a Pirate defense that allowed just 14.5 points per game (7th in the nation). He also received his third consecutive MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honor becoming the first player in conference history to earn the award three times on either offense or defense.




Rod Broadway, North Carolina Central University, “SBN Sports Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year” –Broadway led his team to a perfect regular season (11-0) for the first time in the school's 83-year gridiron history on the way to winning their first-ever SBN Black College National Championship. The Oakboro, N.C. native is in his fourth season with the Eagles and has won 30 of his last 35 games while coaching North Carolina Central to back-to-back conference (CIAA) championships for the first time in 33 years.

The 2006 SBN All-American Team includes Hampton University place kicker Andrew Paterini. He joins an elite group of athletes with his selection to the team for a third consecutive year. Past consecutive three-time honorees include, Indianapolis Colts defensive back Antoine Bethea, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair, Green Bay Packers linebacker Tracy White, and former Denver Broncos tight end and current CBS Analyst Shannon Sharpe.

The 2006 SBN Sports Black College All-American Team will be honored at the 33rd annual BCAA Awards Banquet on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia. The Master of Ceremonies for the event is Comedian/Actor, A. J. Jamal, who will be joined on the stage by co-hosts Ty Miller, SBN Director of Sports and American Urban Radio Networks’ Personality Anji Corley.

The Black College All American Awards Weekend (BCAA) recognizes and celebrates the academic and athletic achievements of student athletes who play football at America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Weekend activities include a welcoming reception, an NFL “Skull Session” brunch and the gala awards ceremony. It is attended by past and present NFL players including Doug Williams, Mel Blount, Greg Lloyd, Bennie Anderson, Tracy White and Michael Strahan, the members of the 2006 BCAA Team, their families, event sponsors and special invited guests.
