Opening Day for Corp members
Dr. Martin Luther King said that “everyone can be great because everyone can serve.” Today, at high-energy events across America, more than 1,500 young people proved the truth of those words by pledging to serve as Young Heroes through City Year’s “Young Heroes” program, a citizen service initiative supported by a $1 million contribution from Bank of America and led by City Year corps members.
City Year, a proud member of AmeriCorps, is a national service organization that brings together young adults, ages 17 to 24, from diverse backgrounds for a demanding ten-months of full-time community service, leadership development, and civic engagement.
In 17 locations across the United States, these young leaders invest their talents and energy to address our country’s most critical needs. City Year corps members engage others in service and make a positive difference in their communities and in the lives of children and youth.
City Year's vision is that one day; the most commonly asked question of a young person will be, "Where are you going to do your service year?"
Founded in 1988, City Year has established programs in Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Cleveland, OH; Columbia, SC; Columbus, OH; Detroit, MI; Little Rock, AR; Los Angeles, CA; Louisiana; New Hampshire; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Rhode Island; San Antonio, TX; San Jose/Silicon Valley, CA; Seattle/King County, WA; and Washington D.C.
