Stomping "Stomp the Yard" Reviews ... (183 hits)

Some of the reviews for the movie “Stomp the Yard,” have been less than favorable.

Nevertheless, considering that I don’t know squat about the world of stepping, I still found one reviewer’s commentary to be somewhat culturally demeaning.

An example is the commentator’s statement that the movie is ONLY about “College kids fight for the right to dance in Stomp the Yard.”

So, for those of you who are in the know about the genre of stepping, I hope you see the movie, read the reviews, and then provide some type of rebuttal to such a comment as the one I found lacking in cultural awareness. In other words, in your opinion, do you surmise that the movie is ONLY about college KIDS who are FIGHTING for the right TO DANCE?

I wanted to enjoy the movie but it was not easy. I did not see much about HBCU life or Greek life that looked familiar to me.

You brought up some very good points, Lynn.

And again, I am the last person to give a scenario on stepping, but it is important to acknowledge the existence and relevance of stepping because of the nature through which it is conducted/performed.

In other words, CONNECTING the "stepping" to the other important issues raised or hopefully raised in the movie, was seemingly one of the primary catalysts that was a focal point for the character's redirection towards the area through which the stepping (fraternities/sororities) takes place, an institution of higher learning.

Therefore, it is an important element of the film's message – And, in my opinion, whatever aspect of such higher learning that it takes to get one there, however, unusual to some, is relevant. So, stepping must be more than “just” being able to dance.

By the way, from the myriad of fraternities that were represented in the movie, only one, to my knowledge declined their approval to have its symbol/insignia displayed in the film, the Alphas.

Nonetheless, I would hope that those "in the know" could share their views on the significance of stepping and its relation to HBCUs.
