USA Today runs Meter photojournalist’s work
By Eddie Cole

Kenneth Cummings, award-winning photojournalist of The Meter student newspaper, recently had a photograph taken by him published in the USA Today newspaper print and online edition.

The USA Today Thursday, Aug. 3, article “More states giving holiday from sales tax” was accompanied by Cummings’ photo of Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen assisting two shoppers at a store in Memphis. Bredesen was in town promoting the state’s first-ever tax holiday.

“A fellow intern told me that the photo ran so I went online to check it out, and there it was with my name under it,” Cummings said. “I thought, ‘Man, USA Today today? What's next?’ That's the attitude that I have for my photojournalism.”

USA Today has a daily circulation of more than two million copies nationwide every weekday and more than 35 million monthly viewers visit usatoday.com. The photo originally ran in the Commercial Appeal where Cummings, a rising junior speech communication and theatre major from Memphis, interned this summer.

He won a $4,000 scholarship from the Scripps Howard Foundation to intern as a photojournalist this summer. At the Commercial Appeal, under the auspices of the paper's chief photographer, he worked closely with a mentor who splits his time between shooting and editing. He was also set to work with a reporter to attend the paper's summer academy of brown bag lunches with speakers on various journalistic topics for internship. In April he won a TSU College of Arts and Sciences Academic Excellence Special Award for publication of his compelling photographs, helping The Meter to a total of 65 awards since January 1998, including 19 for the spring 2006 semester.

In March Cummings won first place for feature photography in the Society of Professional Journalists Region 12 Mark of Excellence Awards and now is in national competition. Other recognition he has garnered includes a host of New York Times awards for journalistic excellence issued by his newspaper adviser, Pamela E. Foster, and staff awards issued by his newspaper editor, Eddie R. Cole Jr.

“Kenny’s experience and professional work at the Commercial Appeal builds on the excitement I already had for the upcoming year,” Cole said. “Our readers can continue to look to The Meter for outstanding work and Kenny’s preparation under outstanding summer tutelage proves that we strive for perfection when it comes to serving our reading community.”
