Most of Us Are In The Minority.....AGAIN (497 hits)

But this time it's in a good way, b/c we're HBCU-ites! (Is that a word? lol)

I know that most of us went to/attend/will be attending an HBCU to obtain our undergraduate degree, but if you attended a predominantly white institution (PWI) for undergrad instead, would you go to an HBCU for a graduate degree? Do you feel you'd have the same school spirit as you do from undergrad?

Many of us can't really answer the above questions so in place of that, do you think that HBCU graduate degrees are less credible than PWI graduate degrees?

Would you attend the graduate program that your undergrad school offers, if available? (HBCU or PWI)

Holla at me....if you can!

Hi Craig,

In my opinion, I believe that where one attends college should be one piece of the puzzle when making a determination as to which college he/she would want to attend as an undergrad or grad student.

The first thing should be what a particular college offers in the way of curriculum that also includes whether the institution is accredited in one’s degree area of choice. Of course, some of that would entail a person having some idea of what they are trying to become, doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc.

Secondly, a person’s personal aspirations and their willingness to attain their goals also are important. In other words, if a person wishes to study law, medicine, etc., he/she should realize that there would be a considerable amount of study and focus necessary to reach such goals. It’s not gong to be easy though. Also, there might be a situation wherein a person might have to transfer due to a change in degree sought, personal issues, etc.

Oh yes, there’s the “Ivy League” mystic – Harvard in Massachusetts; Princeton in New Jersey; MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology); and Yale in Connecticut, etc. All of which are, as you stated, “PWI.”

But, all in all, it doesn’t really make too much of difference whether a person chooses an HBCU or a “PWCU (predominantly white college and University).” Ultimately, its what the student makes of his/her college experience.

As for whether a degree from an HBCU being “less credible than (one earned from a) PWI,” I believe it’s more of how skilled and “credible” the individual student/graduate is rather than where he/she attended college.

**Food for thought - (I’m sure there are plenty of Ivy leaguers and other college graduates out of work today, whether it’s because of them or circumstances beyond their control. And, there also are plenty of people with just a high school diploma fairing far better in the employment world than someone with a college degree.)
Peace,
Jane
